What is ACRYLIC paint? Paint is made up of 3 basic ingredients: Pigment, binder and vehicle. Pigment gives paint its color, binder sticks it to the surface and the vehicle is what makes it spreadable. In Acrylic paint the binder is a plastic like substance (acrylic) and the vehicle is water (unlike oil-paint where the vehicle is oil). That is why acrylic paint belongs to the group of water soluble paints , like tempera or watercolor or craft paint. Acrylic paint comes in tubes or little containers. Either one if fine for our purposes. |
A word about KIDs' ART SETS
Please be aware that many "kids art sets" are very cheaply made and have very low quality items in it. Especially the crayons and the paint that comes with it is sometimes almost unusable. I find it sad that such things are being sold to well meaning people who feel they are giving a special gift in order to support a child's artistic talent. I would suggest to just buy items separately and put your own art set together. It might seem more expensive but in the long run it will be much better. If you don't know much about art materials maybe a friend can help with the purchase. Believe me it's worth it, bad art supplies can be extremely disappointing and dampen a child's joy of creating.

What are CHALK PASTELS?
Chalk Pastels are a chalk based medium, a powdery substance compressed into square sticks much like school chalk. But has a variety of more radiant colors. What are OIL PASTELS? Oil Pastels are oil a based medium, an oily substance compressed into solid sticks much like crayons but richer in color and quality. They also come in a big variety of colors. Even though Oil Pastels can be expensive you can get relatively inexpensive sets at local craft stores. Any paper above 30lb will work well with pastels, it mainly depends on what you are trying to accomplish. Colored paper enhances the of your pastels. |
The thickness or heaviness of paper
depends on its intended purpose, so each type of paper has a typical weight.
Sketch paper is the thinnest, lightest paper, varying from 30 to 60 lbs. It isn't meant be used for finished drawings, as most will discolor and degrade quickly. However, it's economical, and perfect for short studies, sketches, and working out ideas.
Watercolor or printmaking paper has to be the thickest, heaviest paper because it must withstand the moisture from the water media applied to it. It usually weighs between 90 and 140 lbs.
This is the paper we use>>>>>>Graphite or charcoal drawing paper doesn't need the durability of watercolor or printmaking paper, but is heavier than sketch paper. It usually weighs between 70 and 100 lbs.
